It is very common for people who come to our nutrition consultation or make online nutrition visits to come with a series of doubts and preconceived ideas about issues related to diet. These ideas often have to do with diet myths or unfounded beliefs.
And when it comes to food, we tend to give credibility or accept advice from people around us without consulting these statements with a nutrition professional. In this way, these maxims are becoming established in our society. As dietitians – nutritionists in our Barcelona practice, part of our job is to reverse and demystify these ideas.
10 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND MISIDENAS ABOUT FOOD
Let’s go with 10 myths or beliefs about food that we usually encounter in consultation and that often generate false beliefs regarding eating habits or specific foods.
- EATING CARBON HYDRATES MAKES YOU FAT
Carbohydrates have been the biggest victims in recent years as a large number of harms related to weight gain have been attributed to them. Are carbohydrates really fattening? Should we avoid them at dinners? What carbohydrates are most recommended? In this video I answer you:
- WHOLE FOODS ARE LESS FAT FAT
As I told you in the previous video, there is no food that alone will make you gain or lose weight, since it will be your diet as a whole that will make you gain or lose weight. However, whole grain products do have different health benefits for which you should consider including them in your diet if you do not already do so. In the following video, my colleague Clara Muñoz explains it to you.
- LETTUCE RETAINS LIQUIDS
On this occasion we have to act as lawyers defending lettuce, to which the myth that it causes fluid retention is attributed. Like most vegetables, lettuce is rich in potassium and therefore, it will do the opposite. If you feel bad, try incorporating other vegetables.
- IS IT RECOMMENDED TO HAVE ONLY ONE FRUIT OR YOGURT FOR DINNER IF WE WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT?
This is a question that often appears in the first visits of people who aim to follow a diet to lose weight. But is it really necessary to have a very limited intake of this meal of the day? What consequences can this have on our diet? Don’t miss Natalia Celma’s response.
- IS FOLLOWING A GLUTEN-FREE DIET BENEFICIAL FOR YOUR HEALTH?
Should people who do not have celiac disease or non-celiac gluten intolerance restrict their gluten intake? Excluding gluten from foods in a generic way is another trend that has been followed in recent times, but how much is recommendable about this practice?
- ARE ORGANIC FOOD HEALTHIER?
It is very likely that many of you have thought that the answer to this question is yes. However, we should not establish that relationship lightly.
- WHEN IS A PERSON CONSIDERED OBESE? WHERE IS THE LIMIT BETWEEN OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY?
The growth of the obesity rate in our society is truly worrying. It is especially alarming how the little ones continue with this trend. According to the World Health Organization, at least 2.8 million people die each year due to overweight and obesity. Ana explains how to know if you are overweight or obese.
- WHAT ARE THE MAIN ERRORS WE MAKE WHEN WE WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT?
Often people who come to our consultation to lose weight have previously tried to diet on their own, committing one (or several) of the mistakes that I detail in this Saber Vivir program.
- ARE THERE HEALTHY Satisfying FOODS?
I already dedicated an entire article to satiating foods but I would like to answer this question again here, since the fear of going hungry is very common when trying to lose weight.
