As part of Bayer’s “We Have an Age” campaign, I explained the benefits of healthy eating for male sexual function. Certain diseases that are directly related to diet are known to influence male sexual health. This is the case with poorly controlled diabetes, overweight and obesity, hypertension or cholesterol. All these pathologies increase, for example, the risk of developing erectile dysfunction.
For this reason, nutrition can interfere with this tendency. In other words, eating a varied and balanced diet (as is the case of the Mediterranean diet) will help us to achieve and maintain an adequate quality of life.
THE RIGHT DIET
Following a Mediterranean diet is based on complying with a series of basic premises. In the first place, it consists of increasing the consumption of vegetables and fruits because they are rich in water, fiber and antioxidants.
In addition, olive oil should be used, preferably raw, as the main source of fats.
On the other hand, the consumption of saturated fats, very present in full-fat dairy products, fatty meats and sausages, should be reduced.
In case of drinking alcohol, it is also necessary to moderate its consumption and limit it to a maximum of two glasses of red wine a day. On the other hand, it is interesting to note that wine is rich in polyphenols and therefore has a “cardio-protective” effect.
Another recommendation is to promote the consumption of both white and blue fish over meat, as it is rich in unsaturated fats.
One food that is often forgotten is legumes. The Mediterranean diet contemplates eating legumes at least a couple of times a week.
And although we talk about diet, we cannot forget the importance of consuming other farinaceous foods such as potatoes, pasta, rice and bread. None of them should be missing in our diet or daily menu. In the case of foods such as pasta, rice and bread it is preferable that they are consumed in their integral alternative for being more nutritious.
DO NOT FORGET THE EXERCISE
A good complement to this diet and that, in turn, will help improve the sexual health of men is to perform some type of physical activity on a regular basis. This is beneficial both to improve the well-being and performance of our organism and to help us maintain an adequate weight.
If all aspects are taken into account and we also try to consume fewer calories and avoid a sedentary lifestyle, our health will improve and will be reflected in a better sex life.
